Brain damage at birth could be due to negligence

When you enter a Kentucky hospital to give birth, you expect excellent medical attention. If something happens to your newborn child, you may be left wondering if the medics involved in delivering your baby were at fault.

One of the most upsetting things that can happen is a brain injury to your child. While some of these will heal with time, others can lead to severe effects such as cerebral palsy. These are some of the reasons that brain injuries can occur to newborn babies:

  • Infection of the mother: If the mother has an infection during pregnancy, this could affect the baby’s development. Diseases that could cause problems include syphilis, rubella, herpes and varicella. If medics spot the infection and treat it, damage to the child may be avoided.
  • Jaundice: This is relatively common when babies are born. As long as the hospital staff spot it and treat it straight away, it should not be a problem, but failure to do so couldn’t leave lasting damage.
  • Asphyxia: If the birth cord wraps around your baby’s neck, it could cut off the air supply. If not remedied promptly, it can damage the brain or other vital organs.
  • Trauma: Sometimes, physicians will use forceps or vacuum suction to deliver a baby. If not used with great care, these could damage your baby’s head and brain.

If your baby suffers a birth injury in Kentucky, seek legal help to understand if you could file a medical malpractice claim. The damage may affect your child for the rest of their life. While not all brain injuries are the hospital’s fault, some could be attributed to negligence.
